This week Extreme Global and it’s US partner CFR Rinkens has switched to the fumigant Vikane to treat our machinery and car containers from the USA. Vikane is a Sulfuryl fluoride-based insecticide.
New Zealand has a strict border protection programme and part of that is ensuring that no foreign pests enter our eco-system. A key predator at present is the Brown Marmorated Stink Beetle that resides in the USA.
Historically, the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) has mandated the use of methyl bromide for treatment of such products as export logs and imported used machinery and cars from the USA.
Methyl bromide has been phased out of many countries for some years now, however New Zealand has continued to use it. Now recent MPI regulatory amendments have allowed us to move to Vikane.
Vikane is viewed as is effective against a wide variety of pests, having more rapid penetration and less prone to odour when compared to methyl bromide.
