Motorhome Import Process: Start to Finish
1. Source & Purchase
Whether you buy online or in-person, always verify the seller’s credibility and ensure there are
no outstanding liens or finance. We can assist with title verification and documentation.
2. Procurement Support
Need help finding the right vehicle? Our UK-based procurement agents can source and
purchase a compliant motorhome on your behalf, including VAT recovery support.
3. Pickup & Port Delivery
Once confirmed, our agents arrange pickup and transfer to the Port of Southampton. We
handle all export paperwork for both buyer and seller.
4. Shipping to NZ
Most motorhomes are shipped via Roll-On Roll-Off (RORO) services. Smaller units may
qualify for containerised shipping. We’ll advise on the most suitable method based on your unit’s
size and location.
5. Biosecurity & BMSB Treatment
To meet NZ’s strict biosecurity standards, your motorhome must be clean and free of debris.
Heat treatment is mandatory for most used motorhomes due to Brown Marmorated Stink
Beetle (BMSB) regulations. We coordinate these treatments pre-departure.
6. Marine Insurance
All vehicles must be covered by comprehensive marine cargo insurance during transit. We
provide this as part of our service package to ensure full protection.
7. Border Clearance in NZ
We handle all formal paperwork and submit it to NZ Customs and MPI for processing,
including compliance with duties and GST where applicable.
8. Inspections & Compliance
Motorhomes must meet NZ standards for:
● Electrical and gas certification
● Self-containment (toilet and waste water)
● Structural and safety inspections
We can connect you with certified compliance agents to ensure your motorhome is ready for the
road.
9. Release & Delivery
Once cleared, your vehicle is released from the port or depot. This typically takes 3–4 working
days. Our team can deliver it directly to your home or preferred compliance centre using a
specialist vehicle transporter.
For RORO shipments, we meet you at the port gate to ensure a smooth handover.
Can You Load Extras Into the Motorhome?
No — RORO vessel operators strictly prohibit personal effects or supplementary cargo.
Speak to us if you’re considering any special cargo arrangements so we can guide you on
what’s possible based on shipping method.
Cleaning & Border Security
Your motorhome must be free of dirt, soil, or foreign material prior to departure.
MPI (Ministry of Primary Industries) may order re-cleaning at your expense if the vehicle does
not meet biosecurity standards. We ensure your unit is cleaned properly at our UK depots.
Heat Treatment for BMSB
Due to BMSB threats, MPI requires fumigation or heat treatment for most used motorhomes
imported from the UK and USA.
We’ll advise you of the correct treatment method and manage the booking and certification as
part of your shipping plan.
GST Exemptions for Returning Residents
If you’re a returning NZ citizen or resident, you may be eligible for GST exemption on
qualifying personal effects.
Let us know your situation and we’ll help assess your eligibility.
